Managing Recurring Transactions

Quick Review

  • Why: Stay on top of payments and see future account balances

  • How: Settings > All Recurring or create from existing transactions

  • Note: Simplifi automatically matches recurring items to downloaded transactions

Overview

Recurring Transactions in Quicken Simplifi help you track expected bills and income while projecting future account balances based on these recurring items. Once set up, Simplifi automatically searches for and matches downloaded transactions to your recurring items within a certain variance.

Ashley uses recurring transactions for all regular monthly obligations like rent and utilities. This provides visibility into upcoming expenses and helps ensure adequate account balances throughout the month.

How Recurring Transactions Work

As transactions download, Simplifi searches for matches to your recurring items. Unmatched recurring reminders appear:

  • In the Bills & Payments view at the top of account registers

  • In the Bills & Payments section

Manually Matching Transactions

When Simplifi doesn't match a transaction correctly and the reminder still shows "Past":

  1. Click the three dots to the upper right of the "Past" Reminder

  2. Select Link to transaction

  3. Locate and click the matching transaction

  4. Click Link

Simplifi removes the reminder from Bills & Payments view and matches it to the downloaded transaction. Linking also increases matching accuracy for future transactions.

Accessing Recurring Transactions

  • All recurring series: Settings > All Recurring

  • Upcoming reminders only: Bills & Payments section

Creating Recurring Transactions

From All Recurring Section

  1. Navigate to Settings > All Recurring

  2. Click + Add button (upper right)

  3. Select the transaction to make recurring and click it

  4. Click Create

Simplifi creates the recurring transaction using the Date, Payee, Category, and Amount from the selected transaction. Select Edit Series to modify the pre-filled data.

Ashley's Approach

Ashley creates recurring transactions immediately when starting new services while details are fresh. They review quarterly to end series for cancelled services and ensure all regular bills are captured. Manual matching helps when automatic matching fails, especially for transactions with varying amounts.

The Bottom Line

Recurring Transactions in Quicken Simplifi automate bill and income tracking while providing future balance projections. The system learns from your matches over time, reducing manual work. Regular maintenance ensures your recurring items accurately reflect your financial obligations.

Hint: Create recurring transactions the same day you sign up for a service. Ashley learned this after missing several subscription payments that weren't set up as recurring. Now they follow a simple rule: "New service = New recurring transaction." They also make a calendar note when cancelling services to remind themselves to end the series in Simplifi, preventing confusion from outdated reminders.
