Customize your Quicken Classic experience

Quicken Classic for Windows offers several ways to adjust the layout, font size, workspace, and toolbar so you can work more comfortably and efficiently. This topic provides an overview of key customization options and where to find them.

Customize the toolbar

You can personalize the toolbar to include shortcuts for the actions you use most often.

To customize the toolbar:

  • Right-click anywhere on the toolbar.

  • Select Customize Toolbar.

  • Use the customization window to add, remove, or rearrange buttons.

This is especially useful for quick access to frequently used accounts, tools, or reports.

Adjust display settings for readability

If you need larger text or prefer a more compact layout, Quicken provides basic options to help you see more or reduce eye strain.

To change the register row height:

  • Choose Edit > Preferences.

  • Select Register from the left panel.

  • Under Row Height, choose Comfortable, Standard, or Compact.

To increase text size across Quicken:

  • Go to the View menu.

  • Select Use Large Fonts.

These settings apply immediately and can make navigating Quicken more comfortable on high-resolution or small screens.

Create more space to work

When you're working with long account registers or transaction lists, you can free up space by hiding interface elements you don’t need.

To maximize screen space:

  • Collapse the Account Bar using the arrow at the top of the bar.

  • Collapse the Navigation Bar by clicking its arrow icon.

  • Right-click the Toolbar and choose Collapse Toolbar.

You can restore these items at any time.d them.

  • Archive or delete very old transactions when appropriate (choose File > File Operations > Year-End Copy).

Reduce memory use for large files

If your Quicken file is large or you're experiencing slowness, certain preferences can help reduce memory usage.

To adjust settings that can improve performance:

  • Choose Edit > Preferences.

  • Select Setup from the left panel.

  • Uncheck options like Keep track of recently opened files and automatic backup reminders if not needed.

  • Consider creating a year-end copy to archive older transactions (File > File Operations > Year-End Copy).

Use caution when removing old data—always make a backup first.
